The Moderating Effects of the Supervisory Relationship between Intolerance of Uncertainty and Psychological Burnout amongst Child Counselors

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to explore the moderating effects of the supervisory relationship between child counselors¡¯ intolerance of uncertainty and psychological burnout. A total of 146 child counselors working at child counseling centers in Korea participated in this study. The results of this research were as it follows. First, child counselors¡¯ intolerance of uncertainty had a positive correlation with psychological burnout and the supervisory relationship had a negative correlation with child counselors¡¯ levels of intolerance of uncertainty and psychological burnout. Second, among the total scores and sub-factors of the supervisory relationship, total score of the supervisory relationship, reflective education and structure exhibited significant moderating effects between child counselors¡¯ intolerance of uncertainty and psychological burnout. In particular, these effects were observed to more significant when child counselors¡¯ intolerance of uncertainty level was low. In conclusion, this study highlights the importance of providing more educational and structural supervision to diminish the effect of intolerance of uncertainty on psychological burnout amongst child counselors.
